The impact of Sunscreen on Marine Life 防晒霜对海洋生物的影响
Whether your approach to tanning is sunflower style or vampire-alike, we all should use protection when directly exposing to the sun as its UV lights are increasing their power and intensity.
But are all sunscreens similar? What does this imply?
Previously, we answered on how to be an eco-conscious traveler.
With this article, we want to give a quick breakdown of how sunscreens aren't born equal and fair to the environment, what do we know and what we can do as consumers.
Every time we apply any traditional protection, we wash, sweat and breath it away.
And this is true for any standard skincare and cosmetic brands.
So what happens when we use a common solar cream and we go for a swim?
According to the International Program of the State of the Ocean (from now on IPSO), the impact of sunscreens and skin-care products on marine life is serious.
Among the harmful chemicals, Oxybenzone, or BP-3, has a huge influence on corals and algae. This chemical can be found in over 3500 products, and it has major side effects on marine life, including coral bleaching.
These chemicals accumulate in coral's tissues inducing bleaching, even damaging and deforming their DNA.
They affect mussels and algae, weakening their photosynthesis, also they have the power to modify fishes reproduction and fertility mutating their genes.
What we can do, as always, stands in the choice we make when purchasing our products.
And we are happy to say that the market is flourishing with innovative brands that are shaping their business around the environment and people's health protection.
Searching online, you can find several brands, check their reports and their ingredients, and even if their packaging is recyclable.
Unluckily, we haven't found any local brand, but we are sure that soon this will become a thing in China too.
Down here, we listed those brands we managed to find on Taobao, but you can discover many more. They might be a little pricey compared to the common sunscreen, but can we actually put a price tag on our skin and on the environment?

Since the components of these lotions are natural and organic, the first things you'll notice is that the consistency is very different from the usual ones.
At first try, they appear to be more undiluted and more tricky to use.
For instance, beeswax-based lotions, like Badger's ones, aren't easy to apply due to their thickness. They might leave a light glaze on your skin, but they work great keeping your epidermis soft and hydrated, you'll notice afterward.
You might need a couple of experiments to decide the product that most suits you, don't give up at the first attempt.

Any tips to share?
