Nowadays, this has developed from travel tend to a priority, especially in the hospitality sector. Increased consumer and governmental awareness about this environmental crisis has lead to a rising demand for eco-accommodation, considered to be both sustainable and respectful for people and nature.

Tourism contributes to about 5% of global greenhouses emissions, a percentage that is expected to grow by 130% within 2035. At the same time, to align with the Paris Climate Agreement, the International Tourism Partnership (ITP) found that the hotel industry will need to reduce its gas emissions per room by 90% by 2050 (compared to a baseline from 2010). Besides gas emissions, the hospitality industry produces a huge waste of water, disposable materials, energy, and food.

Eco-Hotel is a relatively new concept. On a global level, one of the most famous certifications is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). However, each country has its certifications and usually more than one. Introduced in 2006, China Three Star System has grown to become one of the most popular green building standards in China. Since there is not a standard definition, we can simply define an Eco-Hotel as an environmentally responsible accommodation following green living practices. These can include the use of renewable energy systems, recycling bins, environmentally safe cleaning products, towels and sheet re-use programs, organic food or locally sourced food, sustainable materials and non-toxic varnishes for construction and interior design, ban of disposable toiletries. This list is not exhaustive of what hotels can do to be respectful to the environment, more can always be done.

URBN demonstrates that a luxury hotel does not need to be always heavy for the environment. The hotel managed to create a sustainable and elegant luxury design that is enjoyable for clients and good for the environment.
Located in a vibrant and elegant hub, the hotel was a former factory warehouse in French Concession and is China’s first 100 percent carbon-neutral hotel through his partnership with South Pole (one of the world's leading high-quality carbon offsetting companies). Reclaimed materials can be found everywhere from the outside to the inside part of the hotel: 100 percent locally source grey old bricks from French Concession and reclaimed wood for flooring. Vintage suitcases are used as decoration in the lobby and recycled wood has been used for creating sleek furniture in the rooms where beds are made from natural fibers including seaweed, coconut, and cactus fiber.

URBN uses energy-efficient lighting and environmentally-safe cleaning products. The hotel uses a water-based air conditioning system, heat recovery ventilators, and roofing insulation. They have a recycling program for any sheets and blankets can no longer use as well as electronic waste.
Despite its commitment to cutting down on waste, URBN does not skimp on comfort and style, shining a positive light on the concept of eco-hotel in China.

This minimalist and elegant hotel is located in Hongqiao area, close to the Fuyuan Zen Temple. The hotel is adopting many strategies to be more sustainable. It has not used commercial varnishes in the entire building and has chosen negative oxygen ion mud for the interior walls. The negative ion concentration is up to 8000-10000 per cube centimeters so that customers can enjoy breathing like in the forests without leaving Shanghai. The hotel's key idea is to keep it simple and in this way reduce energy consumption. Sustainable materials such as cotton or fabrics have been used for interior design. Customers cannot find any plastic in the hotel since it has put strong attention to craftsmanship, where the objects are realized by the local community of craftsmen. Even the small room card bags are sewed by housekeepers leading to a total abandonment of the conventional paper card folders.
